Experience the Beauty of Fernando de Noronha, Brazil's Hidden Treasure
There are places in the world that don’t just take your breath away—they make you feel like you’ve stepped into another realm entirely. Fernando de Noronha is one of those rare islands where reality outshines even the most dazzling postcard. Tucked away in the Atlantic Ocean off Brazil’s northeastern coast, this volcanic archipelago is raw, remote, and radiantly beautiful. It’s not just the landscapes that captivate you—it’s the electric connection between land, sea, and wildlife that pulses through every moment here.
Whether you’re standing on a cliff watching spinner dolphins dance through the waves or wandering the cobbled remnants of a pirate-era fort, Noronha invites you to slow down, breathe deep, and live fully. With each turn of a trail or dip beneath the waves, this island whispers secrets meant only for those bold enough to find them.
Getting Around the Island
One of the best ways to get a feel for the island is by renting a buggy. Imagine zipping around the tropical scenery, ocean breeze in your hair and sunshine all around. Just make sure you book in advance, especially if you're there during the busy season, which we learned the hard way on New Year's Eve when every rental shop was sold out. We ended up taking the local bus, which was super affordable (around a dollar per ride) and surprisingly convenient.
If you're a fan of cycling, consider renting a dirt bike. The island’s rugged roads and trails can be pretty thrilling.
So Many Forts to Explore
Fernando de Noronha has a rich and sometimes tumultuous history, which is reflected in its historic forts. There’s Fort São Pedro do Boldro, built to ward off pirates, and Fort Noronha, which dates back to the 17th century. Walking around these forts, you can't help but feel the weight of centuries of history.
I could practically hear the echoes of explorers and pirates from days gone by. Make sure to snap some photos of the cannons and enjoy the scenic views of the ocean from these elevated spots.
Dolphin Bay Experience
About three years ago, I had one of my most unforgettable moments at Dolphin Bay. This is a prime spot to see spinner dolphins leaping through the air, and it’s truly a sight that leaves you in awe. You can often catch the dolphins right from the shore or the cliffs, just swirling and playing in the waves. If you want a front-row seat to their acrobatics, take a boat tour. Don't forget your binoculars—trust me, it’s worth it.
Don't Miss the Shark Museum
Now, I’ll admit that when I heard about the Shark Museum near the northern tip of the island, I was a bit skeptical. But wow, was I surprised! It turned out to be a quirky spot better than I expected, filled with fascinating facts about different shark species. The highlight for me was the display of real jaws, which truly gives you perspective on these majestic creatures. Plus, there are fun photo spots that let you channel your inner Poseidon.
Baby Sharks at Bodi
Speaking of sharks, make sure you drop by Bodi. Even though swimming and snorkeling are off the table there now, you can still see baby sharks swimming right along the shoreline. It's one of those experiences where you're just standing there, soaking in the beach vibes, and suddenly a little shark swims by—it feels like a scene out of a movie. Accessing this lovely beach does require a park pass, so don’t forget to arrange that ahead of time.
Time to Hit the Trails
For those of you who love hiking, Fernando de Noronha is a treasure trove of trails that offer stunning views. We tackled the Trilha do Toine trail, which isn’t overly strenuous and leads to the island’s highest point. The panoramic views at the top are jaw-dropping, and there’s a real sense of accomplishment when you reach the peak.
A hidden gem we discovered was the Swesi viewpoint on the Saim Dos Fort Trail. It gives you a beautiful vista over Swesi Bay and showcases the unique rock formations the island is known for.

Dive Into Underwater Adventure
If you're into scuba diving or snorkeling, you’re in for a treat. Being a UNESCO World Heritage site, Noronha boasts some of the most vibrant marine life you could ask for. Our diving adventures included exploring coral reefs teeming with colorful fish, and we even spotted some sea turtles and manta rays.
For snorkeling spots, don’t miss out on places like Sancho Bay and the vibrant waters around Bodi. Even if you’re a beginner, the underwater wonders here are accessible and awe-inspiring.
Food Lover's Paradise
Let’s talk about food because Northeastern Brazil is famous for its seafood, and you absolutely have to try it when you’re on the island. One of my favorite places was a local eatery named Shika Da Silva. The energy there is contagious, and their seafood dishes are phenomenal. If you're looking for something more upscale, Casimba Bistro offers a chic dining experience with innovative takes on classic dishes.
Oh, and check out Mar Kam Com for an incredible fusion of Asian and Brazilian cuisine. The Poke bowls were a highlight for me there, mixed with a lovely atmosphere and a super friendly owner.
Beautiful Beaches Beyond Compare
Fernando de Noronha's beaches are truly some of the best I’ve encountered. The variety of stunning beaches across the island means you can find the perfect spot to relax or have some fun.
For instance, Praia do Atalaia's natural pools are ideal for snorkeling and are great for families. The trail leading to it is well-maintained and rather short, so even the kids can manage that hike. Make sure to book your reservations for this gem as they regulate the number of visitors to keep it pristine.
Another favorite was Praia do Sancho, often crowned as one of the best beaches in the world. Getting there is a little adventurous, as you’ll need to climb down a series of steep ladders, but believe me, the pristine sands and crystal-clear waters are worth every step.

The Iconic Morro Dois Irmãos
When you're taking in the views, don’t miss the iconic Morro Dois Irmãos—those two impressive rock formations that have become synonymous with pictures of Noronha. The vantage points around the island provide breathtaking perspectives, especially if you’re huffing from the climb.
Oh, and if you get the chance, visit Conchal Beach as well. This isn’t just a typical stretch of sand; it’s absolutely stunning with a view of Morro do Pico, the tallest point on the island.
End Your Day with a Sunset
As the day winds down, grab a seat at one of the beachside vendors and enjoy an ice-cold drink while watching the sun dip below the horizon. The island offers spectacular sunsets, and you’ll find yourself lost in that golden hour glow.
Fernando de Noronha taught me that paradise isn’t just a place; it’s an experience filled with unforgettable moments and breathtaking landscapes. From the wildlife lurking beneath the waves to the stunning beaches basking in sunlight, this tropical gem is a must-stop for anyone looking to recharge in nature's embrace. Whether it’s a long hike or a lazy day on the beach, you’re bound to find your own slice of paradise here.
